Project: AI – Enhanced, Recycled
Author: Mohamad Hasan Bahari
Il Sensifai team is tackling urban clutter with a high-tech solution: a smart bike station.
The AI-Enhanced Recycled-FRP Bike Station is a smart, GDPR-compliant docking system made from interlocking recycled fiberglass modules that clamp bikes and e-scooters, use edge-AI to signal availability, and reclaim pavement while promoting circular FRP reuse.
A Circular Micro-Mobility Hub for Barcelona
Urban micro-mobility is reshaping how cities move — yet unsecured parking remains one of its most persistent barriers. At Lampugnano M1, Milan’s busiest multimodal interchange, scattered e-scooters and bicycles routinely obstruct pedestrian paths, compromise sight-lines at critical crossings, and undermine public confidence in sustainable transport. The Smart FRP Mobility Dock is a medium-scale, site-specific public infrastructure designed to resolve these challenges at their root — transforming post-consumer fibreglass waste into intelligent, people-centred urban furniture.
AI-Integrated Solution for Urban Mobility
The dock combines two synergistic systems into a single circular installation:
• Circular FRP Architecture — Interlocking petal modules from recycled fibre-glass (sourced from wind turbine blades and boat hulls) form a weather-resistant, slip-rated platform. A universal locking jaw accommodates both e-scooter tyres and bicycle wheels, serving mixed fleets in a single footprint.
• Edge-AI Safety Mast — Twin cameras powered by a Raspberry-Pi run YOLOv11 object detection locally, flagging parked bikes and scooters in the station. A 360° LED halo communicates status in real time — green for available slots, red for occupied — while all processing remains fully on-device, ensuring GDPR compliance with zero biometric data stored.
Sustainability & Circular Economy
Each dock diverts significant composite waste from landfill and incineration. The closed-loop material strategy — shredding, re-extruding, CNC-milling, and end-of-life re-grinding — demonstrates a high-value reuse pathway for FRP waste fully aligned with the EU Circular Economy Action Plan. A lifecycle assessment (Ecoinvent v3.8) confirms a carbon saving of approximately 80% versus an equivalent steel–aluminium rack.
